As we’ve mentioned before, there are many issue-led festivals out there which encompass education and knowledge in particular areas. We’re exceptionally enthusiastic about film being used as a springboard for beginning conversations and research of a topic as a result of it becoming perhaps one of the most accessible mediums. So we are extremely very happy to enjoy both Richard Warden (movie Curator), and Gail Aldam (Festival Manager) from Scottish psychological state Arts and Film Festival from the weblog. The event happens from first – 19th October and there are numerous activities from across the arts along with tests to go see, so please do take a look at their line-up. Now up to a few of the people behind-the-scenes…
Reveal somewhat regarding your job, and what you do…
Gail: we started working for the Scottish psychological state Arts and Film Festival (SMHAFF) back 2008 with its 2nd year. Since that time I’ve had different functions before taking over as Festival Manager last year. This is certainly section of a wider activities and communications role within the psychological state Foundation, the lead lover in the Festival.
Richard: My involvement started with began as a post-screening panelist within Renfrewshire version of the Festival a few years ago. As soon as you volunteer in Renfrewshire, there’s no returning! We became the movie programmer for the region… whilst still being am. Consulting on our Global movie Awards just last year resulted in taking on the movie Curator part for 2014.
You’ve been working eight many years (and counting!), what’s been the most surprising thing obtainable because the concept of the festival became a proper entity?
Gail: For me the essential astonishing and interesting thing could be the standard of wedding and assistance we have had and consistently have from musicians, activists, organisations and members of the public. In 2007, whenever Festival began, the theory was for a weekend of movies in Glasgow which may deal with people’s perceptions of psychological state. Because first year it expanded to a two week-long Festival across Greater Glasgow and from now on we've 30 days very long Festival with more than 300 activities in 17 regions of Scotland! We utilize a huge selection of people and organisations across Scotland and have yearly taped attendances of over 16, 000. The Festival is recognized as one of many biggest social justice occasions in the field and contains encouraged similar Festival’s in Dublin, London, Detroit, Belfast, Lithuania, Greece and Finland. I believe that the main popularity of the Festival arises from a desire for a different sort of means of engaging with mental health problems. Accessibility the arts, for market members, creators and members provides men and women the chance to express themselves and develop a deeper knowledge of the difficulties.
Over the past 7 years the Festival indicates that arts and movie tend to be a strong system to generate change, through art we possess the power to both deal with the stigma associated with mental ill-health and promote data recovery. With this in mind, we taken ‘power’ as our main theme for 2014 with a provocative programme that explores the character of personal, governmental and personal energy, looking at the power characteristics in connections; thoughts of disempowerment of mental ill-health; and empowerment believed when taking part in the arts.
SMHAFF addresses all of the creative areas from music, movie, art, theater, dance, literary works… Have you seen a surge of psychological state representation outside of the festival, and it is all of it good?
Gail: one of several targets of this Festival would be to make connections between organisations and individuals who may not usually come together and lots of of the partnerships produced through the Festival period have led to all year round programmes of work. A typical example of this arises from Rod Jones of Idlewild whom, because of make use of the Festival regarding the effective music-like a Vitamin events, now leads a youth songs mentoring project in Wester Hailes, sustained by the psychological state Foundation. There are many various other inspiring tales such as this that have emerge from the Festival and now we see more and more partnerships and contacts becoming made every year.
Our company is in addition trying to increase our effect all year round, taking SMHAFF directly into other Festival’s, enabling united states to engage different audiences in conversations about psychological state. This past year we'd a SMHAFF event during Glasgow movie Festival and then we hope to boost our reach within coming year.
There is a lot of work that explores psychological state themes within various other arts celebrations across Scotland and beyond and we also frequently use the Festival as a system to highlight these events. We welcome different interpretations of psychological state and lots of the job we function is provocative, difficult visitors to contemplate psychological state in different ways.
