This event presents fifty-five paintings from the three establishments that define the nationwide Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh: The Scottish National Gallery, founded in 1850 and housed in an extraordinary neoclassical building designed by among country’s foremost architects, William Henry Playfair (1789–1857); the Scottish nationwide Portrait Gallery, which unsealed in 1889; and also the Scottish nationwide Gallery of Modern Art, which unsealed in 1960. Providing masterpieces from these three separate galleries into one presentation permits an event which possible just in their existing tour. Botticelli to Braque includes multiple musicians and artists, times, and designs, though each one of the works is marked by its excellent high quality. The selection’s earliest paintings consist of mainly religious and mythological subjects: Sandro Botticelli’s serene Virgin and Child; the sensuous gods and goddesses by Titian and Veronese; and Rembrandt van Rijn’s beguiling A Woman during intercourse of about 1645–46, which integrates the sacred in addition to profane with a dramatic image of a lady during sex, possibly representing the Old-Testament bride Sarah. (Rembrandt’s fabric is part of a great number of Dutch paintings of Golden Age into the exhibition, including functions by Frans Hals, Jan Lievens, Gerrit Dou together with youthful Johannes Vermeer.) Spain within the seventeenth century is evoked by El Greco’s enigmatic Fable—perhaps an allegory of imaginative inspiration—and a moving depiction of a vintage lady Cooking Eggs by the youthful Diego Velázquez.
In an exhibition encompassing a surprising number of times, types, and countries of beginning, the eighteenth century occupies a significant place. Jean-Antoine Watteau’s elegant dancers contrast with Thomas Gainsborough’s grand portraits, and Gainsborough’s English surroundings provide a rural counterpoint into the cosmopolitan view of this Piazza San Marco by Francesco Guardi. The great contribution of eighteenth-century Britons towards the customs of portraiture is exemplified in Sir Joshua Reynolds’s depiction associated with the Misses Waldegrave, an intriguing combination of closeness and majesty.
